Grace “The Ace” — Honoring a Trailblazing Aviator

The Orange County Regional History Center recently spotlighted the remarkable story of “Grace The Ace”—a pioneering aviator whose legacy is deeply connected to the history of aviation in Florida.

Known for her skill, determination, and fearless spirit, Grace earned her nickname “The Ace” during a time when aviation was still in its early and often dangerous stages. Her accomplishments helped pave the way for future generations of pilots, particularly women in aviation.

Stories like Grace’s serve as an important reminder of the rich aviation heritage that continues to shape communities like Sebring today. As Sebring Regional Airport continues to grow and evolve, we are proud to be part of a broader legacy built by innovators, risk-takers, and trailblazers.

Back in the early ’70s, when I was working at the FBO, Grace was our flight instructor—and she made a lasting impression. She introduced my brother and me to aerobatics, giving us our first real taste of the thrill and excitement of flight. It’s something I’ve never forgotten.  Mike Willingham, Executive Director

We encourage our community to explore the full story and learn more about Grace’s incredible journey through the Highlands County Historical Society.
